As the Institute’s most extensive solo installation, the primary challenge of the Chicago exhibition was to provide the technical and spatial discipline required to translate the collective labor of our 8-9 person core team into the Art Institute of Chicago's iconic environment. Moving beyond ready-made units, we had to establish a production ecosystem capable of fabricating the entire gallery layout and complex structural systems from scratch, adhering to the Institute’s rigorous standards.
At this stage, my role evolved from individual fabrication to system and team management. As Institute members, we operated with a collective intelligence—managing the design of specialized skeletal structures and critical material selections, such as sheet metal with baking paint finishes. My key insight was that the success of an exhibition of this scale lies not only in the objects displayed but in the synergy of the "invisible" team behind them and the technical integrity of the structures supporting them. These structures, which we designed and fabricated together, formed the spine of the Institute's identity within the space.
The exhibition was both a reflection of the Institute in its mature form and a testament to the intensive collective labor behind the scenes. The holistic spatial arrangement we designed transformed the visitor into an integral part of the Institute itself. For me, as part of a team of young designers, this process represented the pride of realizing a massive production—meeting world-class museum standards through shared vision and relentless dedication.
