The primary challenge for Ek Biç Ye İç, a social enterprise centered on urban farming and sustainability, was to reflect the restaurant's "grow your own food" philosophy in its furniture and structural details. In this living ecosystem, which includes hydroponic farming units, we aimed for the furniture to be more than just objects—they needed to be honest, durable components of a circular economy. Together with Avşar Gürpınar, we developed a material-oriented design language that resonated with the spirit of the space.
As the Production Manager, my greatest achievement in this project was establishing a system that minimized waste and repurposed existing materials at every stage of production. We completed an existing second-hand staircase—which arrived without railings—by utilizing the offcuts from our own chair and table production. At this stage, instead of relying on automated nesting software, we executed a manual nesting process under our full control, precisely calculating the structural integrity and aesthetic rhythm of each piece. We reinforced the staircase with metal frames and handrails, then filled the gaps with these production offcuts, effectively integrating waste into the final design. My key insight was that through strategic production planning, the byproduct of one product can be transformed into the primary material for another structure.
The Ek Biç Ye İç project was an experience where design was finalized not just on the drawing board, but directly in the workshop and during the production phase. The custom furniture series and the upcycling method we applied to the staircase transformed the brand’s permaculture vision into a physical reality. From desktop accessories to the large-scale staircase structure, every piece stands as a testament to how production planning can turn waste into design value.
